Learning
pace with the putter.
I
have often gone to the putting green to give a putting lesson
with a digital metronome in my pocket. A digital metronome
cost about $20.00 and are available at any music store, it
is the easiest way to teach putter pace. Let me explain. Set
the metronome at 66 or 67 beats a minute, then try to get
the length and the pace of the putter to match the beat. The
shorter the putt, the shorter the stroke, and the slower the
pace. The longer the putt, the faster the pace, and the longer
the stroke. The key to consistent pace is to have the same
amount of time in every stroke. I find that students swing
the putter back to far and have to decelerate through the
ball, or swing the putter back to short and have to much hit
in the impact. Both mistakes just mentioned create poor distance
control in putting.
Dave Pelz talks about from outside 100 yards the average player
can control distance but direction suffers. From inside 100
yards it totally flip flops and the average player can hit
it the right direction, but the distance is the main factor
in scoring.
I believe with a little work with a metronome, you can get
a feel for the pace and control the distance of the ball on
the green.
